The NHS Electronic Prescription Service

Over 75% of our patients are using this FREE system and saving time by not having to come to the surgery to pick up their prescriptions.

The NHS Electronic Prescription Service is a reliable, secure and confidential service that can make getting your prescription much easier. Instead of having the green paper prescription, your Doctor can send an electronic prescription to a place of your choice. You may nominate a chemist or supermarket pharmacy – whichever suits you best, and if appropriate a dispensing appliance contractor. Many patients are nominating a pharmacy close to their place or work or where they regularly shop.

You will need to request the prescription on-line* or via  NHS Prescription Ordering Direct ( POD) but you will no longer need to visit the surgery  to pick up your paper prescription which is particularly useful if you have regular repeat prescriptions.  The prescription will be automatically sent to the pharmacy but you will still need to allow 2 days for them to prepare your medication.

Although the change to electronic prescribing is a natural step, paper has not been removed completely and is required in the following situations:

  • If you choose not to use the service
  • If you do not nominate a pharmacy or dispensing appliance contractor
  • If you use nomination but are required to sign for payment/exemption purposes
  • If you have a private prescription or prescription for Controlled Drugs

It is easy to change your nominated pharmacy or choose not to use it on a particular occasion. If you are currently using a prescription service you may not notice much change once you have nominated.

To use this system you just need to tell us which pharmacy you would like to use.

Please let us know if you would like more information on Electronic Prescriptions and our Online Services.
